For our trip we partnered with Standford University’s Prakash Labs. Manu Prakas the inventor of the origami paper microscope known as the “foldscope”. It is indestructible and inexpensive. We took with us diagrams of the different types of mosquitos so students could identify the Zika Aedes mosquito. We also taught the science teacher how to use whatsapp to assign lesson plans for the students on the fly. In order to help mitigate Zika, the science teacher can send out chat messages with assignments to the different classes. For instance she can send out a chat a day after it rains so they student can canvas the area for empty containers where mosquitos can propagate. They can report back how many containers they recovered, how many plants they were able to water with contents as well as take samples for the foldscope slides.
